zEPHYR - Towards a more efficient exploitation of on-shore and urban wind energy resources

A total of 15 PhD positions are available at 8 universities, 1 research center and 4 industries, in the framework of the European Marie Curie European Training Network (ETN) zEPHYR. This project is focused on the development of performant wind farms by addressing simultaneously the individual performance of each turbine composing the wind farm, and the efficient harvesting of the local wind resources in on-shore and urban environments. The researchers recruited in zEPHYR will investigate emerging technologies through laboratory experiments, theoretical modelling and numerical simulations addressing the following aspects: mesoscale and microscale atmospheric boundary layer simulations, rotor aerodynamics, aeroacoustics and structural dynamics, atmospheric propagation and human factors, uncertainty quantification, sensitivity analysis and multi-physical optimization.
In that context, the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (VKI) is offering an ESR position for a PhD project entitled
Atmospheric Boundary Layer simulations with uncertain weather parameters and impact on WT performance and near-field noise
This research project is based on the VKI mesoscale and microscale simulation framework and is aimed at extending the Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) analysis previously applied to pollutant dispersion, to the aerodynamic performance and near-field noise of wind turbines. The ABL simulation results will feed into detailed aerodynamic and aeroacoustic solvers in order to carry out UQ analysis of the impact of uncertain weather inputs on the power output and noise radiated towards a near-field hemisphere centered on the wind turbine. Both large on-shore and small urban wind turbines are considered. This project will be coupled to a second PhD thesis aimed at predicting the effect of atmospheric variability on the long-distance atmospheric propagation towards rural and urban communities.
The PhD will be mainly based at the VKI under supervision by Profs. Jeroen van Beeck and Christophe Schram, and several secondments are foreseen at partner institutions of the zEPHYR network: at Siemens Gamesa (Denmark), The Nottingham Trent University (UK), Universidad Politecnica de Madrid (Spain) and Valeo (France).
The contract can start between the 1st of November 2019 and the 1st of August 2020.
