The von Karman Institute is looking for a Human Resource Director.

About VKI

The von Karman Institute’s primary task is to train scientists and engineers in the field of fluid dynamics. VKI disseminates knowledge in the field and promotes research in theoretical, experimental and computational fluid dynamics. Success in these activities requires integrating research into the training programmes, linking basic and applied research, developing research programmes in line with the needs of industry and large international bodies such as EU and ESA and carrying out all these activities in an international forum. Additionally, the action of the VKI research engineers is carried out using different kinds of tools: experimental approach employing scaled models and advanced instrumentation and numerical simulation using large computers suitable for numerous applications. Used in combination, these are powerful tools that help engineers in design and problem solving for a large number of industrial applications.


- Develop and implement a new HR framework (function classification, personnel evaluation
system, performance based rewarding system)

- Negotiate new HR policies with the unions (Compensation and benefits, holidays, health and
safety, etc...)

- Develop strategies for engaging and training of the personnel

- Develop strategies and tactics against malbehavior and invoke disciplinary action when needed

- Create and document HR related standards


- Proven experience as HR Director

- Proven experience with negotiating collective labor agreements with the unions

- Fluent in Dutch, French and English

- Proven experience with restructuring in collaboration with the unions

- Full understanding of the way an organization operates to meet its objectives

- Excellent knowledge of employment legislation and regulations

- Thorough knowledge of human resource management principles and best practices

- A business acumen partnered with attention to the human element

- Knowledge of data analysis and reporting

- Excellent organizational and leadership skills

- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills

- Diligent and firm with high ethical standards

- University degree in human resources, law or relevant

- Experience with HR in a Scientific research environment is a plus
