Job description

We are seeking a full-time Research Engineer to join the von Karman Institute in the Department of the Environmental and Applied Fluid Dynamics.

As part of a team investigating the liquid metal flow thermal-hydraulic, you will support the numerical research programs of the Environmental and Applied Fluid Dynamics Department at the von Karman Institute. The research engineer will be responsible for the setup, execution and post-processing of liquid metal fluid flow simulations and heat-transfer in various applications, including generation IV. nuclear research reactors.

In particular, she or he will be responsible for the planning of the research objectives, the design of numerical parametric studies, the implementation of missing physical and/or numerical models, as well as, the processing and analysis of the acquired data. Most of the research activities will use a combination of experiments and computational modelling, as such, a basic knowledge of experimental techniques is a plus.

The successful candidate is expected to organize the research data and report results and findings to colleagues and external research sponsors. The candidate is expected to contribute actively to the dissemination of her/his research findings through conference participation and peer-reviewed articles.

The candidate will also assist with grant proposal preparation and, if required, will mentor graduate students and PhD candidates involved in the research projects.

Requirements and Qualifications

* PhD in the subject related to fluid mechanics.

* Documented and comprehensive expertise and/or experience in computational fluid dynamics and is interested in the simulation of industrial fluid flows and thermal fields.

* Experience in numerical simulation using open-source/commercial codes and grid generation packages is required.

* Familiarity with multiphase simulation methodologies is valuable.

* Good knowledge of English is mandatory, Dutch and/or French is a plus.
